Palo Pinto

Palo Pinto Texas

The community of Palo Pinto, Texas is located about 12 miles southwest of Mineral Wells. Established around 1857, the original name was Golconda, but sometime after March of 1858, was renamed Palo Pinto. It has always been and remains our county seat with the Palo Pinto Courthouse being centrally located off of US Highway 180 across from our county jail.

As of the 2020 national census, the current population is 147.

Always a small community, many folks like Palo Pinto due to it’s small town feel and the importance of knowing your neighbors. The school system is serviced by Palo Pinto Independent School District and is Pre-Kindergarten thru sixth grade. A benefit for this area is that for Junior High and High School, the kids have the choice of going to Gordon ISD or Mineral Wells ISD.

So, living in a more rural community, what do you do and where do you shop for groceries? For things to do, Lake Palo Pinto is only 10 1/2 miles south and Possum Kingdom Lake is only 24 miles northwest. Both lakes have public boat ramps, fishing and swimming. Possum Kingdom Lake is a much larger lake and also offers camping, a golf course and numerous events throughout the summer. As for groceries, you can always pick up a few items at Red’s Grocery. But, when it comes time for a major trip, Mineral Wells offers a Super Wal-Mart, Sav-A-Lot and Metro Grocery.
